Confucius
551 BC – 479 BC
Confucius was a teacher and philosopher who lived in ancient China more than 2,500 years ago. He taught that kindness, respect, and lifelong learning build a good life and a fair society, though he spent much of his life traveling from state to state failing to convince rulers to adopt his ideas. His students collected his sayings into a book, the Analects, which centuries after his death became the foundation of China's civil service exams for over a thousand years and is still studied around the world today.
