Henry David Thoreau was an American writer who spent two years living simply in a small cabin near Walden Pond, writing about nature, independence, and living deliberately. His book Walden and his essay on civil disobedience — refusing to follow unjust laws, an idea sparked by a night he spent in jail for refusing to pay a tax in protest of slavery — influenced later activists like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. He believed people could learn the most important lessons by paying close attention to the natural world around them.
