Toni Morrison was an American novelist whose powerful books, including Beloved, told deep and moving stories about Black American life and history. Beloved won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988, and in 1993 she became the first Black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, honored for the beauty and power of her language. She also worked for years as a book editor, helping other Black writers get their voices published and heard.
