Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish author who wrote thrilling adventure novels including Treasure Island, the story that gave the world its most famous pirates and buried treasure. He also wrote Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, whose tale of a split personality was so vivid that "Jekyll and Hyde" became a lasting phrase in the English language. Though often seriously ill, he traveled the world by ship and donkey, finally settling on a South Pacific island called Samoa. He also wrote A Child's Garden of Verses, a book of poems about childhood that families still read at bedtime.
