Rachel Carson was a marine biologist and writer whose book Silent Spring warned the world about the dangers of harmful chemicals to nature. Her careful research helped start the modern environmental movement, led to a nationwide ban on the pesticide DDT, and helped inspire the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. An earlier book of hers, The Sea Around Us, won the National Book Award and spent well over a year on the bestseller list. She showed that one well-researched book could change how a whole country thinks.
