Oscar Wilde was an Irish writer famous for his witty plays, clever sayings, and his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. At Oxford he won the Newdigate Prize for poetry and graduated with top honors in classics. His play The Importance of Being Earnest is still regarded as one of the greatest comedies ever written for the English stage. He loved to turn ordinary sentences upside down to make people laugh and think at the same time. He remains one of the most quoted writers in the English language.
