Nelson Mandela was a leader in South Africa who fought against an unfair system called apartheid that kept Black and white people separated by unfair laws. He spent 27 years in prison for standing up for equal rights, and in 1993 won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work toward ending apartheid. The following year he was elected South Africa's first Black president and worked to unite the country. He is remembered worldwide as a symbol of forgiveness and courage.
