Murasaki Shikibu was a Japanese noblewoman and author who wrote The Tale of Genji around a thousand years ago, a book many consider the world's first novel. She served as a lady-in-waiting in the Japanese imperial court, and her detailed, thoughtful writing captured the customs, poetry, and emotions of Heian-era Japan. Her masterpiece is still read and studied around the world today.
