Louisa May Alcott was an American author best known for writing Little Women, a beloved novel about four sisters growing up during the Civil War. She based much of the story on her own family and experiences. Before that success, she wrote thrilling, sensational stories under the pseudonym A. M. Barnard to earn money for her family. She was also an outspoken supporter of women's rights and the movement to end slavery, and served as a nurse for the Union Army during the Civil War.
