Hippocrates was an ancient Greek physician often called the "Father of Medicine" because he taught that illness had natural causes, not magical ones. He believed doctors should observe patients carefully and always try to do no harm. Doctors around the world still take a promise inspired by his ideas, known as the Hippocratic Oath, though historians think the large body of medical writing credited to him was actually the work of many physicians over generations.
