Harriet Tubman escaped slavery and then risked her life again and again, returning to the South to guide dozens of other enslaved people to freedom along a secret network called the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War she also worked as a scout and nurse for the Union Army, becoming the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war — a raid that freed more than 700 enslaved people in a single night. She later fought for women's suffrage alongside activists like Susan B. Anthony, and is remembered as one of the bravest figures in American history.
