Georgia O'Keeffe was an American painter famous for her large, close-up paintings of flowers and for the stark, sun-bleached landscapes of the New Mexico desert she loved. Her bold, simplified style helped define American modern art in the 20th century, first championed by the influential photographer Alfred Stieglitz, who exhibited her work and later became her husband. She lived to 98, spending much of her later life alone in the desert and painting into her nineties despite failing eyesight, finding endless inspiration in its bones, rocks, and wide-open skies.
