Francis Bacon was an English philosopher and statesman who argued that real knowledge comes from careful observation and experiments, not just old books and opinions. His ideas helped lay the foundation for the scientific method that scientists still follow today, and by tradition he died living out that principle: catching a fatal chill while testing whether snow could preserve a chicken's meat. He also served as a high government official in the courts of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I.
