Desmond Tutu was a South African archbishop — the first Black person to lead the Anglican Church in South Africa — who spoke out against apartheid, an unfair system that separated Black and white South Africans by law. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his peaceful efforts to end apartheid, and later helped the country heal by leading a commission that let people share the truth about the past.
