Charlie Chaplin

1889 – 1977

1900s Britain-USA · Filmmaker

Charlie Chaplin was a British filmmaker and comic actor who became the most famous person in the world during the silent film era. He created the Little Tramp — a shabby, big-hearted character in a bowler hat with a bamboo cane and enormous shoes — who made audiences laugh and cry without a single spoken word. He wrote, directed, and composed the music for his own films, and used comedy to speak up for people who had very little.
