Charles Lamb was an English essayist famous for his warm, funny, and personal essays written under the pen name Elia. Together with his sister Mary he wrote Tales from Shakespeare, a beloved book that retold Shakespeare's plays as stories children could enjoy — he never married, instead spending his life caring for Mary, who lived with severe mental illness. He spent his days working as a clerk and his evenings writing some of the friendliest essays in the English language.
