Babe Ruth

1895 – 1948

1900s USA · Athlete

Babe Ruth was an American baseball player famous for his powerful home-run hitting, which helped transform baseball into America's most popular sport. He started his career as a dominant left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox before being sold to the New York Yankees in 1919 and switching to the outfield to make full use of his bat — a sale so regretted by Boston fans it became known as the "Curse of the Bambino." He set numerous batting records that stood for decades and remains one of the most celebrated athletes in American history.
